Decision tool – Work out if your introduction is categorised as reported

This tool is related to step 3 of the process to categorise your chemical introduction.

What is your chemical's name or CAS number? (optional)

Note: enter this information if you'd like to save a copy for your own records by using the print function in your browser. A completed decision tool is not sufficient to meet your record-keeping obligations

Enter the CAS number or chemical name

Have you already completed steps 0 – 2 of the categorisation process?

Is the total introduction volume of the chemical 10 kg or less per registration year?

Note: this is the combined volume of the chemical that you will introduce in an AICIS registration year in all your products that contain the chemical.

Is your chemical in the following table?

Chemical name CAS number
Benzene, 1,1'-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis[2,3,4,5,6-pentabromo- (also known as decabromodiphenylethane or DBDPE) 84852-53-9
Benzene, 1,1'-oxybis-, pentabromo derivative (also known as pentabromodiphenyl ether) 32534-81-9
Benzene, 1,2,3,4,5-pentachloro- 608-93-5
Benzene, hexachloro- 118-74-1

Will your chemical have an end use in cosmetics?

Note: If your chemical will be an ingredient in cosmetic products, answer yes.

Is your chemical prohibited or restricted in the EU or USA for use as a cosmetic or in a cosmetic?

Chemicals that are prohibited or restricted in the European Union or United States of America:

  • Annex II of Regulation 1223/2009/EC on Cosmetic Products (prohibited substances)
  • Annex III of Regulation 1223/2009/EC on Cosmetic Products (restricted substances)
  • US Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act (prohibited and restricted ingredients in cosmetics)

Note: If your chemical is prohibited or restricted, then answer yes – even if you will introduce the chemical in accordance with the restrictions.

As far as you know, is the chemical classified according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals as having:

  • carcinogenicity

  • germ cell mutagenicity

  • reproductive toxicity

Note: You could check the SDS, product information sheets, or ask your supplier.

As far as you know, will the chemical be introduced as a solid or in a dispersion?

Note: You could find out about the appearance from the SDS, technical data sheet or your supplier. For example, if the SDS indicates that the chemical being introduced is a liquid, answer 'no'.

As far as you know, does the chemical consist of solid particles in an unbound state or as an aggregate or agglomerate, any of which have at least one external dimension in the nanoscale (1-100 nm)?

Note: You could check if there are any claims related to the presence of solid particles at the nanoscale in technical data sheets and commercial labels for the product containing the chemical.

Does statement a) or b) apply to your chemical?

  1. a) As far as you know, the chemical does not contain fluorine. You could check the chemical name or INCI name to see if it indicates that the chemical contains fluorine (F), or you could check with your supplier.
  2. b) The chemical is an inorganic salt.

As far as you know, is your chemical persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT)?

Note: You could check the SDS or find out from your supplier. More information on the meaning of PBT is in the 'Australian Environmental Criteria for Persistent, Bioaccumulative and/or Toxic Chemicals' on the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water's website.

Does your introduction meet the criteria for a low-risk flavour or fragrance blend?

Note: Your introduction may meet the requirements of either Scenario 1 or Scenario 2.

Do you want to work out if your introduction meets the criteria for the reported category - research and development?
