Environment categorisation volume – use our quick and easy online calculator

Our new online tool offers an easier way to calculate an introduction's environment categorisation volume.

Following the release of our online calculator to help you work out an introduction’s human health categorisation volume, we’ve now launched an environment categorisation volume (ECV) calculator to save you time and effort. You may need to know your ECV when working out your introduction’s environment exposure band at step 5.3 of the ‘Guide to categorising your chemical importation and manufacture’ (Categorisation Guide).

The calculator tool is an alternative to manually working out the ECV using some of the equations in the Categorisation Guide.

To use this calculator, you need to know the end use for the chemical, plus the quantity that’s being imported or manufactured in an AICIS registration year.

Select from one of 29 end-use scenarios that apply to the chemical that you’re importing or manufacturing. Then enter the introduction quantity or volume in kilograms. The tool will instantly calculate the ECV of your chemical introduction.

If the chemical you’re introducing has more than one end use, you can add extra scenarios and introduction volumes. For example, if you import 500 kg of a chemical for an end use in laundry and dishwashing products, and 1000 kg of the chemical for an end use in cleaning and furniture care products, the calculator will incorporate both end uses in the equation to give you a final answer.

Using the new calculator to calculate categorisation volumes may mean your introduction ends up being in a lower environment exposure band with less regulatory obligations.
